This was the first lake outing of the year for my 7 year old granddaughter. She just had to get in the boat and tube. So we packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and met “Poppa” at the dock. We found a quite little cove–perfect for eating lunch and learning to tube alone.
She was so excited about tubing by herself, but when the time came to actually get in the tube…well, let’s just say that we stayed in the cove for a long time until she finally found enough courage to just sit in the tube. We would push her out from the boat and pull her back in…and push her out and pull her in…and push her out and pull her in. She was happy just doing that, but she came for more adventure…she just didn’t know it yet.
We finally cranked the motor and very slowly started pulling her around the little cove. Then we went a little faster. I had explained to her the different hand signals…thumbs up meant faster and thumbs down was slower. She quickly discovered on her own that a thumb straight across meant “that’s good” and a quick cut across the throat meant STOP NOW!
By the time we were ready to head to the dock, this little daredevil was giving the thumbs up and pointing to bigger water…there were more adventures and bigger waves to be had on the high seas!
